On September 6, Mya Whitaker marks four years as Executive Director of BAUDL. But her connection to the organization began long before she stepped into the role. September also marks more than 17 years of Mya’s involvement with BAUDL as a student, alum, leader, and now Executive Director. That experience gives her a unique perspective on the organization’s mission and the transformative power of debate for young people.

“It’s hard to believe it has already been four years as Executive Director. I’ve learned so much in this role. Every day brings a new challenge, but I’m honored to help preserve this organization, so the next generation of students like me can have the opportunity to debate.”

Leading with Purpose

As Executive Director, Mya helps carry forward an organization that has played an important role in the lives of young people across the San Francisco Bay Area.

Mya states she’s proud to help bring this transformative experience to youth across the San Francisco Bay Area.

For Mya, leadership is also deeply connected to the people who make BAUDL possible, including its Board of Directors.

“I truly value getting to know our board members as individuals. One of my first priorities as Executive Director was conducting one-on-one meetings with each member to understand why they joined and what keeps them committed to BAUDL. Learning their personal ‘why’ and seeing the dedication they poured into the organization long before my tenure gave me a profound appreciation for the unique strengths they bring. Meeting weekly with my board chair has also provided invaluable mentorship as I navigate the growing pains of this leadership role. Because the board has maintained steadfast governance and financial oversight, I have had the foundation and space needed to sharpen core skills and keep our organization resilient through uncertain times.”

BAUDL demonstrates strong board governance through regular touchpoints between the Executive Director, Board Chair, and Board members. This board best practice builds trust, alignment, and accountability while maintaining clear governance and operational roles.

Investing in Young People

After more than 17 years with BAUDL, Mya has seen generations of young people discover their voices through debate. She continues to see tremendous potential in today’s students.

“I often tell our students that they are like young superheroes. Like many heroes at the beginning of their origin stories, they don’t yet realize the full extent of their power, and without the right guidance, that energy can sometimes lead to harmful choices.

“I truly believe that when we champion their individual strengths, give them room to learn from their mistakes, and show them a better path, they will amaze us with what they can achieve. Ultimately, investing in their potential builds a stronger, safer community for all of us.”
