5 Simple Tips for Keeping Your LinkedIn Fresh

Posted On by

Whether you are actively in the job market, hiring for a new position, or comfortable where you are, a current LinkedIn profile is essential. Over 310 million worldwide users actively use LinkedIn monthly, and more than 87% of recruiters use the platform as a tool in their candidate search. LinkedIn allows you to build your professional brand and network online easily and effectively. KEES provides five tips to keep your LinkedIn fresh and set you up for future success – even for the most casual LinkedIn user.

  1. Keep your login information current.

Use an email address that is yours for the long term. You can associate multiple email addresses, but KEES recommends your primary LinkedIn be connected to a personal email address. You can then easily access your account anytime.

To manage your email address, check out this article for step-by-step instructions.

  1. Make it easy for connections to reach you outside of LinkedIn.

Many LinkedIn users do not include their email and/or phone number in the contact information section on their profile. While users can message you on LinkedIn, it is important to ensure connections can contact you directly.

  1. Customize your profile URL.

The generic LinkedIn user’s profile URL includes your name with a string of letters and numbers. You can make your profile more professional and easier to share with potential connections and/or employers by customizing it. Try a few options with a combination of your first and last name – maybe throwing in your middle initial if needed! Stay away from “cute” profile names like “cat lover.”

To customize your profile URL, follow the instructions in this article.

  1. Update your profile regularly (not only when looking for something new).

Even if you are a casual user who doesn’t post content on LinkedIn, keeping your profile up to date is essential. This includes having a recent profile photo (a professional photo – not a selfie in your car) and cover photo and updating your title and experience with any job or position changes. You want anybody looking to see the most up-to-date information.

  1. Grow your network!

Be sure to continually grow your network on LinkedIn by adding connections. If you are just getting started, you can add connections from your email contacts. You can easily connect with others by joining relevant groups that match your industry, location, interests, and more. This will increase your visibility and grow your extended network.

With these tips in mind, you’re sure to have everything you need to keep your LinkedIn profile fresh and create opportunities to meet other professionals, learn, and/or find a job. Dive in and update your profile today!
